California Institute of Integral Studies San Francisco, California EDI and Van der Ryn Architects' plans for the restoration of Building 39 at the Presidio will participate in the conversion of an historic military post by the National Park Service. The retrofitted building will become the new home of the California Institute of Integral Studies, thus contributing to the PresidioÍs plan for a central campus of organizations dedicated to sustainability, peace and understanding in the Pacific Rim. Building 39 is a 60,000 square foot concrete and masonry structure. The program for rehabilitation and reuse includes classroom spaces, a library, Student Services, a Bookstore, a Counseling Center, Cafe, and Administrative Offices, plus upgrades for seismic, fire safety, and accessibility. Within the scope of the project, we have focused on preserving the essential historic character of the building, remediating its toxic materials, and demonstrating the superior environmental qualities of naturally-ventilated buildings. |
